Ageing skin can be due to both internal & external factors, and affects all areas of skin on the body in different ways. External factors which can exacerbate the onset of lines and wrinkles can include smoking, chronic/cumulative UV (sun) exposure, processed/refined diets, as well as environmental pollutants.
Internal factors can be attributed specifically to predisposed individuals, such as lifelong hormonal changes which women experience. Internal factors are largely a process of gradual cellular ageing, amongst men & women, affecting all skin types. Both processes affect the way and the rate in which we age. Skin which ages mainly due to internal factors can often appear as finely wrinkled, with some sagging and laxity evident. Changes in pigmentation are usually mild and discreet in appearance in lighter skins, but may be more widespread in darker skins. External (extrinsic) factors are usually caused by photoageing, which is an umbrella term referring a number of environmental factors. These are generally more noticeable on chronically sun exposed areas, such as the face, neck, chest and hands and can appear as thicker, textured skin, extensive lines & wrinkles, roughness, uneven pigmentation & visible fine thread veins (telangectasia).
